update to Audit Committee
Since my last post, we (Sam Tunstall,Craig Pond, and myself ) have had our meeting with the accountants, and Audit Committee.
Our original complaint was that the officer in charge of the accounts department, (Julie Gill) and members of her staff were refusing us our rights to inspect the accounts, which is the law of the land.
I later found out from an independant Councillor that we were being denied our rights because of Julie Gills objection to our political party, although we made the requests as citizens of this city.
Let me state from the outset that Sam Tunstall has been requesting this information for the last 8 years, but has only been a member of the B,N,P for 18 months
I myself have been a member for 2 years, and have been requ esting it for 5 years.
Craig Pond has been a member for 1 year, and was helping me with sorting out the information.
We approached the meeting with an agenda of finding out the truth, with a series of questions to Julie Gill and her officers, with referance to the Audit 2007-2008, and to get at the truth as to why we were stopped from gaining this information.
The Chairman, (Ian Mitchell) suggested we move on from our questions on why we were stopped from attaining the information on why we were stopped in our search, as in my opinion this showed the accounts dept in a bad light, and to proceed we agreed.
After no more than three Questions, Julie Gill got up and walked out in a strop, and the meeting continued.
Let me say before going on that this meeting took place on the 24th of October, and it was reported in the Sentinel that she resigned on the 23rd of October, which when I pointed this out on the Sentinel Webb-site, it was instantly deleted.
Questions like the missing £5 million, and the £750,000 fraud connected to the Executive were delected and no answers were forthcomming.
Even Audit Committee Councillors questions were answered vaguely.
We were asked to list all the documents we wanted to inspect, and we would have permission, but when we passed the list to the audit committee, we were informed that the Freedom of information act was being used to block our requests, on documents we had accessed in the past.
Paul Hackney (legal officer for the council) then started to assume an arogant attitude, because someone dared to question his role in the Audit.
His attitude from this time on disgusted everyone in that room, as he started to make his own rules on what documents we could inspect.
The Question I posed (how was the ward budget spent, and what on, from 2004-2008) was squashed, and to date I have still not recieved a reply to.
The Audit Committee chairman gave us 4 to 6 weeks to inspect the accounts extra, until the accounts are finaly signed off.
Mike Coleman arranged to meet the leading members of the Audit body to have a fresh Audit but the meeting was called off half an hour before it was due.
The Sentinel, and the police had all the facts relating to this debacle, but would not investigate.
I wonder why, who has this much power?
I believe that in the future facts relating to this Audit will come out, but the people responsible will not be around to face the questions, or the consequences.
Two have resigned allready, and there will be more to follow, I will make book on it.
